As the Greene County girls’ track and field team prepares for the 2014 season, junior Emily Christensen is getting herself ready to run anywhere from 100 meters all the way up through 800 meters. She did the same thing as a sophomore, and after a successful junior cross-country season, which saw the Rams finish ninth in Class 3A and Christensen competing as the number two runner, she’s looking forward to track and field. She sees herself as a 400 meter runner on the track, someone that can go up to 800 meters, or down to 100 or 200 meters. She believes the Rams could be strong in several relays including the 4 x 200 and 4 x 400, which she hopes to be a part of.
Christensen can see 2014 being a good year for Greene County girls’ track and field. “I think it should be a good year. We have a lot of spread out talent, anywhere from jumpers to hurdlers, from sprinters to distance runners.” The Rams compete in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference, which traditionally has a number of strong track and field events and teams. The girls see strong competition outside the conference as well. Christensen thinks Greene County can be right in the mix this season. “I think if we come out and work hard, I think we can get up there and compete, and probably win some meets.”
The girls open the season indoors on March 17 in Ames at the ISU high school meet, then travel to Storm Lake on March 21 for the Buena Vista University indoor coed meet. The outdoor season is scheduled to open on March 31 in Jefferson for the Rams’ Early Bird Meet at Linduska Field.
