fireworksWe’re still nearly four months away from the 4th of July, but Iowans may be able to enjoy a more explosive Independence Day this year.

A bill in the Iowa Senate to lift the ban on selling and igniting fireworks continues to move forward.

“There is a growing support down at the legislature I can tell you, with talking to folks on the House side and Senate Democrats it’s favorable and it’s still live.  It’s still eligible for debate” says Chapman.

That’s District 10 State Senator Jake Chapman who is the floor manager of the fireworks bill.

“The fact of the matter is since 1980 injuries have decreased significantly while consumption and being able to display these fireworks has really taken off throughout the United States.  We’re only one of eight states that don’t have fireworks and I think it’s just a matter of time.”

Though there are still several steps that the bill has to make before fireworks are legal in Iowa, Chapman says he’s optimistic.

“I’m not certain whether or not we will get a vote this year but I’m optimistic that we will and I’m very optimistic that if it came to a vote today it would pass.  It would pass both chambers and hopefully the Governor would sign it” says Chapman.

So far, Governor Terry Branstad has not yet expressed his opinion on the fireworks bill.
