The high school track and field season began on Friday night in Storm Lake for the Greene County High School teams. The Rams were among nearly 20 schools competing indoors on the Buena Vista University campus at the BVU High School Elite meet. No team score was kept, but the Rams placed among the top 10 in several events including winning four events; two on the girls’ side and two on the boys.
The girls’ 4 x 60 meter shuttle hurdle relay unit of the Eme Johnson, Kate Sandage, Sarah Sandage, and Nadia Fisher set a meet record of 40.35 seconds en route to placing first. Johnson also won the 60 meter hurdles individual race in :10.15 seconds with Kate Sandage second in :10.17. The 4 x 800 meter relay was third with Emily Christensen, Olivia Hansen, Noelle Gray, and Allison Higgins in 11:01.07. Higgins placed fourth in the 1,500 meter run in 5:32.74, and the the 4 x 200 meter relay was fourth in 1:55.59 with Christensen, Hansen, Emma Saddoris, and Johnson. Nadia Fisher cleared 5′ 0″ in the high jump and tied for fourth place. Mollie Sorber tied for the eighth in that event with a clearance of 4′ 6″. Saddoris was fifth in the long jump at 15′ 3-1/2″ while Kate Sandage placed seventh in the 200 meter dash in 29.72 seconds, and Saddoris was ninth in the 60 meter dash in 8.66 seconds.
The Greene County boys were led by senior sprinter Roman Phillips, who won a pair of races. Phillips set a new meet record in winning the 200 meters in :23.81, and he was first in the 60 meters in 7.24 seconds. Phillips also anchored the Rams to a fourth place finish in the 4 x 200 meter relay in 1:38.31. Dylan Hamilton, TJ Lint, and Max Neese ran the first three legs. Alex Rasmussen was fourth in the shot put at 47′ 0″ with Daric Whipple sixth and Dylan McConnell seventh in the 60 meter hurdles. Whipple was timed in 9.27 seconds with McConnell at 9.28. The Rams were seventh in the 4 x 60 meter shuttle hurdle relay in :38.86 with McConnell, Whipple, Tyler Beger, and Jordan Hostetler. Mitchell Gorsuch was ninth in the long jump at 18′ 3″ and he tied for ninth place in the high jump at 5′ 8″.
The Greene County teams have no competitions scheduled for next week. Next on the schedule is the Greene County Early Bird Coed Meet at Linduska Field in Jefferson on Monday, March 31.
