Greene County girls’ head track and field coach Kelly Simpson likes the blend of experience and youth on the 2014 squad. “I think you’re going to see a nice little balanced team. We’re a little bit shy on the sprinters, more than we like, but that goes through cycles a little bit, but I think from middle distance up through distance we’re going to be tough. The hurdlers are back and they’re going to be a tough unit to deal with, and I think we can score in every field event, so we should be able to do all right in meets.”

The coach added the team can’t afford injuries, illnesses, dropped batons, or falls over the hurdlers. Assuming good health and good fortune, the Rams are looking at a season filled with high team finishes. No team score was kept at the March 21 Buena Vista University Elite Meet for high schools in Storm Lake, but it’s likely the Rams would have done well in the 20-team field with 11 finishes in the top 10.

The outdoor season for the Greene County teams is set to begin on Monday, March 31 with the Early Bird Coed Meet in Jefferson at Linduska Field. Starting time is 4:30 p.m.
