The Greene County School Board met last night in regular session.
The Board approved a pre-kindergarten and three year-old programs for the 2014-15 school year. Superintendent Tim Christensen said there would be three sections for pre-kindergarten with 87 kids signed up and another 31 Head Start kids would make a total of 118 of the 120 available slots for the three sections. As for the three year-old program, Christensen said the morning section would be Head Start kids going four days per week and the afternoon section would be a tuition-based program of $125 per month. However, he pointed out that it wouldn’t totally fund the program, that the district would have to come up with another $20,000 to make the program work. The program would then be reviewed at the end of each year.
The Board also approved the interagency contract with Genesis Development to continue the Educational Based Career program and they approved the second reading of a board policy about graduation requirements and installing the tiered diploma system for next school year.
During the district reading update, reading specialist Julie Neal reported that there were 97 students in grades first through eighth that will be given the opportunity to go to summer school this year and of those students about 60 will be recommended that they take summer school this year.
Christensen also mentioned that the Greene County Early Learning Center’s numbers weren’t quite as long on the waiting list as was reported last month. Currently, their numbers are at a level where they will not require using an extra classroom at the middle school.
Finally, the Board approved the current bus driver contracts at the current rate for route bus drivers until a deal can be reached with the Union in June.
