The Greene County baseball team continues preparations for the 2014 season opener at Allensworth Field in Jefferson vs. the Saydel (Des Moines) Eagles on May 27. Head coach Mark Sawhill is in his twelfth season guiding the Rams and he expects junior right hander Riah Nelsen to take the mound in the first game. “Riah had a great sophomore season last year for us. He went 7-0 and has improved since then. He throws hard and can strike some people out.” The Rams host Roland-Story (Story City) on May 28, also at Allensworth Field. Junior righty Colton Fitzpatrick will likely be the starting pitcher for Greene County vs. the Norsemen. “Colton did a good job for us last season and he’s really looking forward to this year.”

Nelsen, Fitzpatrick, and the other Rams continue practicing to get ready for the season. Coach Sawhill added he’s had all or nearly all of the players at more practices this season than in recent years. Players miss practice due to involvement in Spring sports or other activities. The Rams coach said junior first baseman Alex Rasmussen will be the only player missing this weekend due to his participation in the State Track & Field Meet.
