Jefferson To Raise Hundreds Of Flags Today

A long-time tradition will continue this morning when several Jefferson-area civic organizations help to display 540 flags at the cemeteries to honor fallen veterans for Memorial Day.

Bill Berger says the Jefferson Elks, VFW, DOES, Lions, Kiwanis and Aktion clubs will begin to put up the hundreds of flags at the City Cemetery and St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery this morning at 8am.

Berger comments that within the honor circle at the City Cemetery, there are 21 that represent the most recent veterans who have passed away and are buried there.

Weather permitting, Berger adds that the flags will stay up until Monday afternoon when they are taken down and stored until the next Memorial Day weekend.
Memorial Day Closure Reminders

A reminder to Jefferson residents that several offices and businesses will be closed on Monday in observance of Memorial Day.

City Hall, the Greene County Chamber and Courthouse, the Jefferson Public Library and the Jefferson Post Office will all be closed.

The library wants to remind everyone that nothing is due to the library when it is closed for a holiday and that there won’t be any mail delivery from the post office during Memorial Day.

City officials would also like to remind everyone that garbage routes will be delayed one day due to the holiday on Monday.  So that’s means Monday’s routes will be pushed back to Tuesday and will continue for the rest of the week.  It will go back to its regular schedule next week.

The City asks its citizens to have their garbage out at the curb by 6am to ensure pick up.
Jefferson Pool To Open On Monday

The Jefferson Municipal Pool has had a lot of work done to it in preparation for its opening day of the season on Memorial Day.

Parks and Recreation Director Vicky Lautner says they had 2 new filters, a diving board and 3 lifeguard chairs installed at the pool over the fall and winter months.  But before they officially open for the summer, Lautner wants to remind everyone of some information to help keep the pool clean.

The Iowa Department of Public Health reports that there were 280 cases of the crypto virus found in swimming pools in Polk County last year.  It is a virus that is spread from people who have diarrhea.  To ensure that a pool doesn’t get infected with crypto, Lautner recommends a person stays away from swimming for at least two weeks after having diarrhea.

She adds that if a pool has this virus, they must shut down the pool for two days to properly clean it and kill the bug.  She also reminds people to not urinate in the pool because it can cause poor water and air quality for others.

The pool will be open from 11:30am-1pm on Memorial Day for adult lap swim and then will remain open for general swim time from 1-8pm.
Free Summer Lunches To Be Provided By School District

He states that the free lunches will be served at the Jefferson-Scranton Elementary building from 11:30am-12:30pm and at the Greene County Intermediate building in Grand Junction from 11am-12:30pm.  Both programs will be from June 9th through August 1st with the exception of the 4th of July when there are no meals served.

Christensen adds that adult lunches are $3.25 for any family members that want to eat with the students.
