The Perry High School Research and Design class showed once again that they are a force to be reckoned with when it comes to creating super fuel efficient vehicles.
The class entered three cars into this year’s Southeast Polk Industrial Technology Exposition and its Ultimate Mileage Vehicle Race.
The competition has students build or redesign cars to go as far as possible on just 16 ounces of gas.
A total of 26 cars showed up to compete and Perry’s new car Number 43 EFI, driven by junior Ryley Anderson, took first with 251 miles per gallon. Marking the thirteenth time Perry has won the race in the past fourteen years.
Industrial Technology teacher Darin Steva says what’s really impressive is that the Perry team has less than a semester to work on their cars, while other schools in the contest do so over an entire school year.
Perry’s other car SCHU 42, driven by senior Jason Krueger, placed 5th with 150 miles per hour. And the third vehicle, driven by Connor Sacket, which runs on a propane injection and diesel engine would have placed first overall with 280 MPG.
