Iowa Racing And Gaming Commission’s Public Hearing Draws Several Speakers

When the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission visited Jefferson on Thursday about the proposed Greene County casino, it took all afternoon to get through the public forum.

The five-member Commission listened to over five hours and 66 speakers give their comments about the proposed $40-million and 18,000-square foot project that includes 325 part-time and full-time jobs, a 71-room hotel, an events center, sports bar, restaurant and casino.

Part of the agreement between the operator, Wild Rose Entertainment and the non-profit partner, Grow Greene County Gaming Corporation was to give up to 20% of the 5% charitable contribution to the six contiguous counties around Greene County.

The supporters talked about economic development, increased funding for community projects, job creation and population growth.  The opponents spoke about cannibalization of other casinos, namely Prairie Meadows Casino in Altoona and Meskwaki Casino in Tama.  Even the non-profit license holder of Wild Rose Emmetsburg, Palo Alto Gaming and Development Corporation spoke in opposition of the casino in Greene County.

Commission Chair Jeff Lamberti told Raccoon Valley Radio that the Commission takes each public hearing seriously because it’s an important part of their decision-making process for a casino.

The next step will be the Commission’s final decision in Burlington on Thursday, June 12th.

Motorcycle Accident In Greene County Sends A Man To The Hospital

A Perry man is in fair condition at a Des Moines hospital after a motorcycle accident in Greene County earlier this week.

Sheriff Steve Haupert says at 8:50pm on Tuesday night, 53 year-old Daniel Eugene Hull of Perry was traveling on 305th Street near V Avenue, south of Rippey, when he lost control of his 2008 Yamaha V-Rod motorcycle and slid into the grassy triangle intersection.

Hull was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines where hospital officials say he is in fair condition.

Haupert explains that the 53 year-old victim was lucky to have landed in a grassy ditch rather than on the road which probably helped to save his life.

He adds that Hull was cited for Failure to Maintain Control and recommends that everyone should drive the speed limit and take it slower in unfamiliar areas.

Hull’s motorcycle reportedly sustained heavy damage in the accident.

Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
