Grand Junction Community CenterThe Grand Junction City Council voted earlier this week to officially condemn the community center.

It is one of the first steps that the City wants to take to establish a new community center.  The existing building is on Main Street and the proposed new building would be located next door to the west.

Jan Scharingson is with the building committee and she says the new proposed center would hold over 250 people with a large and small conference rooms, an office area for City Hall, a kitchen and public restrooms.

She points out that they have raised over $200,000 for the project which is being entirely funded by donations and other fundraising events.

While a total amount and size of the proposed facility is still in the planning stages, City Clerk Rita Jenkins says they need a new community center to improve their City and host larger events in the community with the hundreds of expected jobs to increase in the next few years.

She notes that they are going to be hosting a garage sale of the usable items from the current community center.Grand Junction New Center

Jenkins adds that by August 1st, the building will be closed to the public as they look for grants to help with the demolition of the facility.

Anyone who would like to donate money for a new community center can call City Hall at 515-738-2585.
