The Greene County High School softball team avoided an upset on the road Wednesday night when they scored twice in the sixth inning and won at Gilbert 2-1. Junior Marisa Promes was the winning pitcher as she struck out 13 batters and walked just one. Two of Gilbert’s three hits were bloop singles and the only hit that wasn’t resulted in a triple that scored the Tigers’ lone run. That was in the first, and the three-bagger took place after a dropped third strike allowing the previous batter to reach first base.

Greene County’s runs were also unearned. Junior Emma Saddoris reached second base in the sixth inning when Gilbert dropped a fly ball to left field. An error on a ground ball off the bat of junior Emily Christensen scored Saddoris and tied the game 1-1, and Promes delivered a triple to left field that scored Christensen with what proved to be the winning run.

The Rams maintain second place by themselves in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference and are now 7-1 in the league and 9-4 overall. The Tigers have just two conference wins and three victories overall.

Greene County is off tonight and home with North Polk (Alleman) on Friday night in a game broadcast on KG98 around 7:30 p.m. Friday’s game in Jefferson is the only one at home in the last six games and after that the Rams are back on the road Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of next week.
