Greene County’s Helping Hands of Habitat for Humanity has been repairing a house at 502 North Vine Street and they’ve been receiving extra help recently.
John and Linda Coldiron are apart of Habitat for Humanity’s RV Caravan which is a group of people that travel the country working on housing projects for the non-profit organization, two-weeks at a time.
The Prescott, Arizona couple have been involved with the group for six years and have traveled as far east as Kentucky and as far north as Michigan but John Coldiron explains why they come to Iowa at least once every year.
“It’s a personal reason, we have one son who lives here in Iowa, up in Dows. We usually wrap some of the trips into and around Iowa to get in touch.”
The Coldirons started working on the house last past Sunday and will be here for another week before returning home to Arizona as they finish up their third project of the summer. The couple is currently staying in their RV at Spring Lake Park and Linda comments how nice the community has treated them since they arrived.
“The Spring Lake Park is really nice. It’s very quiet, it’s a pretty little park. And I love Jefferson. Jefferson’s a pretty little Iowa town, it’s got a nice feel to it and we’ve been very welcomed and feel very comfortable here.”
John notes that there’s usually a crowd of six-to-seven couples are travel together helping out Habitat for Humanity but adds that this year is unusual since they were the only ones who signed up to help with various projects.
One of the biggest benefits, points out Linda, is giving back to communities and meeting new people across the country.
Linda says that anyone can get involved with the RV Caravan group by going onto the national Habitat for Humanity website.
