A Jefferson man was taken to a hospital with injuries following an accident.
Police Chief Dave Morlan says at 3:34pm on Thursday, 90 year-old Arthur Tonye of Jefferson was pulling into a parking stall at the Gardens Retirement Community located at 1000 West Washington Street.
The accident report shows that when Tonye tried to reposition his 1999 Pontiac Bonneville, the vehicle’s accelerator cable became disconnected forcing Tonye’s Pontiac to throttle forward. It jumped the concrete curb striking a handicap parking sign and a brick support barrier in front of the Gardens.
Morlan states that Tonye had shifted the Pontiac into reverse and it hit Duane Young’s 2011 Ford Fusion that was behind him in another parking stall.
The Fusion was pushed to the east and Tonye’s vehicle continued south where it hit a marker cone by a roll-off dumpster before the vehicle came to a stop on a curb. The report shows that the Gardens faculty were able to help turn off Tonye’s vehicle as he was applying his brake.
Morlan notes that Tonye was taken to the Greene County Medical Center by the Greene County Emergency Medical Services for injuries, the extent of which are unknown at this time.
Tonye’s vehicle sustained $2,500 in damages, Young’s Ford Fusion had a reported $7,000 in damages and $2,500 in damages to the Gardens.
Morlan comments that they didn’t issue any citations with the accident occurring on private property and due to a vehicle malfunction.
