Airbags And Seatbelts A Major Factor In Semi Vs Car Accident In Greene County
Minor injuries were the result from a semi versus car accident earlier this week in Greene County.
Sheriff Steve Haupert says at 1:16pm on Wednesday, 18 year-old Brittany Baumhover of Dedham was heading east on 330th Street, near the Greene and Carroll County line, when she tried to make a U-turn at the intersection of Brentwood Avenue and her 1999 Pontiac Bonneville was hit by a semi-tractor trailer that was also heading east.
61 year-old Dwayne Rand of Waterloo took evasive action to avoid hitting the Pontiac, but pushed the vehicle into the south ditch.
Haupert states that everyone was wearing their seatbelts and the Pontiac’s airbags deployed which played a major role in saving Baumhover and passenger, 18 year-old Zena Olberding of Carroll’s lives.
Baumhover was extricated from her vehicle and taken to St. Anthony’s Regional Hospital in Carroll with minor injuries while Olberding was treated for her minor injuries at the scene. Rand was uninjured in the accident.
The Pontiac is a total loss and $10,000 in damages was done to the semi-truck.
Haupert adds that citations will be issued following the completion of the investigation.
Monday’s Storm Causes Severe Vehicle Damage In Jefferson
Monday’s severe storm brought with it some major vehicle damage in Jefferson.
Police Captain Mark Clouse says just after midnight on Tuesday, there were four vehicles that were damaged due to high winds blowing over trees.
In the 300 block of North Locust Street, Clouse states that a falling tree damaged a hood to a 1998 Buick LeSabre causing $2,000 in damages, a 2000 Saturn SL2 and a 2005 Dodge Neon were both totaled by the same tree which caved in the roofs.
Another tree had blown over onto a Dodge Journey causing $4,000 in damages to the hood, windshield and a door in the 500 block of West Lincoln Way.
In all cases, Clouse adds that no one was in any of the vehicles, nor was anyone hurt and all vehicles had insurance.
He reminds everyone that strong, straight line winds like Monday’s storm can cause damage just like a tornado. He recommends that during severe weather, a vehicle is the last place you should seek shelter. Instead, go inside a building and stay away from windows.

Jefferson To Offer Free Brush Chipping
Starting Monday, the City of Jefferson will be offering its free brush chipping service to residents.
Residents are reminded to have their brush stacked in arm piles and have their cut ends facing the curb to make it easier for the City crews to chip it. The brush pick up may not necessarily happen on your normal garbage pickup day and weather will also be a factor for collection.
Whole trees will not be accepted for chipping.
It will be from Monday, June 23rd through Thursday, June 26th with the next free brush chipping week to be at the end of July.
Anyone with questions can call City Hall at 386-3111 during normal business hours.
