Guthrie Co. CourthouseA Guthrie Center man will appear in court next week for a preliminary hearing as he awaits trial on two counts of assault on a Peace Officer, both of which are Class “D” felonies.

Guthrie Center Police Chief Rod Pavelka tells Raccoon Valley Radio that he and fellow officer Brandon Lenehan were doing a follow up on a possible hit-and-run car accident the afternoon of June 5th at the 1300 block of North Street in Guthrie Center, when 62 year-old Steven Eugene Hayes of Guthrie Center, “displayed a pump action shotgun in a threatening manner while making threatening statements.”

After the Guthrie Center Police Department obtained an arrest warrant for Hayes, he was booked on June 13th and released the following morning after paying his $500 cash bond.

Hayes’ preliminary hearing date is set for next Thursday, July 3rd, at 1:30pm inside the Guthrie County Courthouse.

According to a records search on Iowa Courts Online, these assault on peace officer charges are the first felony offense charges Hayes has faced.

Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
