Greene County ExtensionA free program is provided by the Greene County ISU Extension office later this week to teach people how to buy healthy foods on a budget.

Extension Coordinator Michael Cooley says food and nutrition specialist and registered dietitian Holly Van Heel will take participants on a guided tour of the Jefferson Fareway Food Store and will show them how to buy fruits and vegetables on a budget, compare unit prices to find bargains, how to read and compare food labels, identifying whole grains and sticking to your budget.

He talks about how the class will continued to be offered thanks to funds from Walmart and ISU Extension and Outreach.

“No income guidelines, no requirements whatsoever.  It’s being offered free of charge.  There’s about eight slots per session and we’ll continue to hold these as long as they fill up.  We’ll continue to try and get the dates out as we have them.  But with the grant dollars that we have, we’re able to continue to offer this program.”

At the end of the tour, participants will receive a free $10 gift card using it to purchase healthy groceries with the skills learned from the course, a free book of recipe and tips on buying healthy, low-cost foods and a free reusable grocery bag.

The next session is on Thursday, July 24th from 6:30-8pm at the Jefferson Fareway.  To reserve your spot, call 386-2138.
