The Greene County softball team lost 4-1 to third ranked Clarke (Osceola) in a Class 3A State Tournament semifinal that ended early this morning at Rogers Sports Complex north of Ft. Dodge. A rain delay lasting more than three hours starting around 4:30 p.m. set the schedule of games back some 3-1/2 hours and the Rams and Lady Indians didn’t begin playing the final game of the day until 11 p.m. The one hour, 22 minute contest ended at 12:22 a.m.
Clarke (26-8) broke a scoreless tie with a solo home run to center by number nine hitter Allyson Deutsch with one out in the third. The Lady Indians added three unearned runs in the fifth. The Rams (28-8) committed two of their three errors in that inning and Clarke also picked up four of its six hits in the fifth inning.
The lone Greene County run came on the first pitch of the seventh inning when junior Hannah Onken belted her fifth homer of the season well over the fence in right center field. She tied Emma Saddoris for the team lead in home runs and the run batted in was Onken’s team leading 32nd of the season. The Rams have hit at least one home run in seven straight games and they now have 17 round-trippers for the season. Eight of the homers have been in the five postseason games.
Marissa Promes allowed one earned run on six hits while striking out five batters and walking two. Winning pitcher Libby Bemis fanned 12 Greene County batters. She allowed just four hits and walked one.
Junior Tressa Rasmussen had a pair of singles and sophomore Sydney Koch added a base hit.
The Rams face second ranked East Marshall (Le Grand) at 1:30 p.m. today for third place. Coverage on KG98 begins just after 1 p.m.
Bondurant-Farrar beat EM 8-4 in the other 3A semifinal. B-F defeated Clarke for the 3A title last season and the same teams meet at 2:30 p.m. today to decide the 2014 3A championship.
