The Greene County Historical Society will once again host a free event later this week.
Member Chuck Offenburger says their free monthly program will be presented by former fifth grade teacher Jan Durlam of Jefferson. She will talk about her experiences with explaining local history to fifth grade classes in the Greene County School District for the last three years.
A program that started with Mary Weaver and Jeane Burke six years ago extends the historical society into the schools to education young people about local history and how it relates to them. Durlam will also share some of her lectures and artifacts she’s used from the historical museum in Jefferson when she visits fifth grade classrooms.
Special guests will also include past fifth grade teachers and their thoughts about the program when they’ve hosted it as well as other historical society members who have presented other programs to the fifth graders.
The free program starts at 1pm on Friday, August 1st at St. Brigid’s Catholic Church in Grand Junction will a $8 lunch served prior to the program at noon. The menu includes ham balls with a salad buffet. To RSVP for the meal contact any historical society member.
A short business meeting will follow the free program.
