The Perry Youth Football League is getting set for the start of practice on Monday, August 11th. The contact football league is open for students in grades 3 through 6. Coaches have been conducting clinics on Monday and Thursday nights in preparation for the upcoming season. Darren Steva is the Perry Youth Football Coordinator and says the sport is great for kids to be a part of. “Just trying to get them interested in the sport and get them out and active, that’s the main part of this clinic right now just getting them in shape over the summer. Keep them stretched out and keeping them physically active instead of sitting at home and doing nothing.” Currently Perry has over 60 kids out for the three teams that will compete in the Waukee league. 3rd and 4th graders play for the Bluejays, 5th graders play for the Perry Titans and 6th Graders with the Perry Giants. “Were in the Waukee league, last year was the first year, and we left the Indianola league because with the Waukee league it’s a little bit tougher league. The kids get to play as a class instead of sharing time on the field and they get to play a full game, so 3rd and 4th grade play a full game, 5th grade play a full game, and 6th grade play a full game, and one of the main reasons for switching was to run a slight modification of the high school plays, same cadence, same signal calls same names for the same thing, so it’s second nature for them by the time they reach junior high and high school.” Steeva tells KDLS that they still have openings for 5th and 6th graders.
