perry logoConstruction on the newest hangar at the Perry Municipal Airport is nearing completion but once it’s open the building will already be full, with several others waiting to get in.

There has been a waiting list at the airport for quite some time now and City Administrator Butch Niebuhr says the City may be looking to make further expansions in the future but the next step won’t be another hangar.

“We’re looking at expansion of the runway so it kind of takes federal dollars out of it if we’re looking at using federal dollars for expansion of the airport as far as the runway and taxiways, all of the funds will be directed toward that project” says Niebuhr

Though he says they may look into funding options in the future.

“The state is more competitive and you kind of set what you want to put toward it.  Generally what we’ve done is put 30 percent toward a project so if you’re looking at a hangar, and you look at the total cost of this hangar, which is a pretty large hangar being in the area of $250,000-$260,000, our 30 percent of that project is pretty costly.  So, we don’t get that paid off right away.  It takes a few years to pay it off so generally the state wouldn’t give us a grant for another hangar for another 2-3 years.”

But with a waiting list already, Niebuhr says especially if they get someone anxious to get in soon that will help Perry get more points on a funding application it could possibly be done sooner.
