This Friday begins several high school football seasons in Iowa and Adel-DeSoto-Minburn head football coach Mike Whisner is excited to get started tomorrow night against Perry.
The Tigers lost a lot of firepower on both offense and defense from a year ago with only seven starters returning. At quarterback, ADM lost a 2,000-plus yard passer and 50% completion percentage in Kolby Whisner. Coach Whisner says junior Frank Weiland and sophomore Sam McCartney are vying for the starting quarterback position heading into Friday night.
Other key losses were at running back with Grant Goeden who rushed for almost 1,000-yards last season and Whisner believes there are three players in the mix to carrying the ball for the Tigers this season.
Being traditionally a passing team, ADM also lost its top wide-receiver with Tate Jensen but they do return three of their other top receivers with Jake and Joe Sloss and Jonathan Reel.
Another area that Whisner is looking for improvement is on defense. Seven of the top ten tacklers on defense are gone, but Whisner returns the co-team leader in total tackles with senior Zach Ostendorf to help lead this year’s defense, he also has junior Nathan Heath returning on defense that also started with Ostendorf last year.
The Tigers square off against the Perry Bluejays in Adel tomorrow night to open the 2014 season and you can hear that game on KKRF with our coverage to begin at 6:45pm followed by kickoff at 7:30pm.
