The Panorama School Board of Directors met on Monday night.
The Board elected its officers for the 2014-15 school year. Bryice Wilke is the Board President, Tom Arganbright is the vice-president and Sarah Sheeder is the Board Official.
The Board approved to pay $5,732.40 to make a repair to the high school’s geothermal system, the modified allowable growth and supplement aid for the district’s Special Education Deficit was also approved for $171,820.32. The Board appointed Wilke to the Iowa Association of School Boards Delegate Assembly and Arganbright was appointed as a representative to the County Conference Board. They also approved all fundraising requests for the school year.
The Board discussed a literacy policy for the district. As per state legislation, all students must be proficient in reading by the end of their third grade level which includes assessing them and providing additional instruction for those who are not proficient. Superintendent Kathy Elliot noted that the district will most likely implement a summer school program in order to meet the requirements of the legislation. The program could be put in place by the 2015-16 school year.
Elliot also talked about parents receiving a refund due to a settlement in a class action lawsuit against Martin Brothers. She said parents of students who were enrolled beginning with the 2008-09 school year through the 2013-14 school year can receive a $3.50 per student per year refund. Notification will be mailed to parents with instructions on how to file the claims. She also reported that she’s been working with an architect firm about a new athletic complex and facility. A work session will be conducted by the Board to learn more about the details of the plans so they can take formal action at their regular October board meeting.
The Board also approved to continue to hold their regular meetings on the second Monday of every month beginning at 6:30pm.
