A special program returns to the Greene County Historical Museum in Jefferson this weekend.
The “Poetry Out Loud” event will feature local poets performing their original works of poetry to the public on Sunday, September 14th at 2:30pm.
Historical Society member Chuck Offenburger says a local group of poets last performed their poetry at the museum in August of 2013. Founding member of the First United Coven of Greene County-an all women’s poetry group-Colleen O’Brien says the main directive she gives the group is that poetry has more meaning when its out loud then read by someone else.
She adds that by reading poetry out loud, the audience gets a better feel for the cadence and the rhythm of the words. The First United Coven of Greene County group meets bi-monthly and at least half of them have been published several times in “Lyrical Iowa” which is a 70 year-old anthology of poems published annually by the Iowa Poetry Association.
Sunday’s event is free and open to the public and free refreshments served.
