Greene County climbed into the football victory column for the first time this season with a 21-6 Class 3A District 2 win over Algona in Jefferson on Friday night at Linduska Field. The game was the first in five season for the Rams as a 3A program after having played in 2A the past four seasons. Coach Dean Lansman’s team is 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the district while the Bulldogs fell to 0-1 and 0-3 overall.

The Rams scored with 10:14 to play in the first period after taking advantage of the only turnover of the game. Mitchell Gorsuch forced a fumble recovered by Riah Nelsen at the 23 of Algona and Dylan Hamilton scored on a run of 15 yards on the third Greene County play of the night. Nick Schroeder’s extra point made it 7-0. The Rams led 14-0 with 8:46 to play in the second quarter after Hamilton scored his second TD of the night, this time on a run covering 30 yards. Hamilton had all 76 yards on the drive on four carries. He finished with 144 yards on 24 carries.

Algona made it 14-6 on a run of six yards by quarterback Esden Carroll with one second remaining in quarter number three. The Bulldogs were stopped on a conversion run. That was a five play drive covering 80 yards, with Noah Arrowood running for the first 74 yards of the series. Arrowood finished with 110 rushing yards.

The final touchdown of the game came from Ram QB Daric Whipple on a run of 43 yards with 4:05 to play in the contest. Schroeder kicked the extra point. Greene County was able to run out the clock in the closing minutes for the first win of the season.

The defense had a goal line stand for the third time in as many games, and Algona had only 120 total yards. The defense held the Bulldogs to negative 11 passing yards.

Greene County remains at home on Sept. 19 for a non-district game at Linduska Field against Creston/Orient-Macksburg. Coverage on KG98 begins at 6:45 p.m. with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
