The City of Scranton’s Water Department will be flushing fire hydrants today and tomorrow.

Dee Jay Byerly with the water department says residents and businesses may see rusty colored water while they are flushing the fire hydrants.  If you see that happen, Byerly suggests that you run the water a couple of extra seconds until the color goes away.

During the two-day flushing period, residents shouldn’t experience any loss of water pressure and the water is safe to drink and use for cooking.  He recommends not to do any laundry for the next two days to avoid any of the rust-colored water from staining clothes.

Byerly points out that they flush the fire hydrants twice per year to clean out the water mains to provide for better water quality.
