safest-cities-iowa-awardThe City of Jefferson recently received recognition by a security company as the “Safest Place In Iowa” to live.

Kim Andrews, the community outreach coordinator for Safe Choice Security says they compiled all of the 2012 Federal Bureau of Investigation crime statistics and focused on property and violent crime numbers to create their list of the Top 20 Safest Cities To Live In Iowa.

According to Safe Choice Security, Jefferson’s violent crimes per capita is rated at a .46 per 1,000 and property crimes is at a 6.22 per 1,000 with a crime index of 89, which Andrews adds means that Jefferson was rated higher than 89% of the cities in the country without crime.

Jefferson Mayor Craig Berry says he’s pleased with the recognition and gives credit to the police department for their service and other programs they provide to help keep the City as safe as it is.

The City of Perry also made it on the list at #14 with its crime index at 50, which means Perry was rated 50% safer than other US cities.

Other cities highlighted on the list are Waukee at #4 and Carroll at #10.
