In an effort to bring domestic abuse to the forefront during Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, the Greene County Coalition Against Domestic Abuse and Assault Care Center Extending Shelter and Support are hosting an event tomorrow in Jefferson.
ACCESS Coordinator Alicia VanCannon says they will have a display of 50 chairs set up at the Greene County Community Center on Thursday, October 9th from 10am-2pm.
She states that each chair has a story about someone who was killed due to domestic violence.
VanCannon points out that they’ve already taken the chairs project to a farmer’s market in September and to the Greene County High School and received an overwhelming response.
“There was a lot of interest from students and from the faculty that stopped and read the stories. Alot of these stories were local. We had one in Jefferson (and) there’s been a couple in Boone in the last few years. So it definitely impacts our community here whether people realize it or not.”
ACCESS provides services to residents of Greene County who may be victims of domestic abuse with legal, shelter, crisis line or medical advocacy for physical, emotional or financial abuse or isolation.
