Harvest season in Iowa means a lot more equipment traffic on area roadways, and this past weekend was a busy one in terms of farm related accidents.

As we previously reported, one person was hospitalized in Dallas County after a tractor backed over a 31 year-old female in Woodward Sunday.  There were also three farm accidents this weekend in Greene County,but fortunately no one was hurt.

The Sheriff’s office responded to a one-vehicle accident at 1:13pm on Saturday in which a blown front tire on a 2000 Ford F-250 pickup truck that was hauling hay bales sent the vehicle into a ditch striking a power line pole in the 1600 block of E Avenue.  Sheriff Steve Haupert notes that heavy vehicle damage was done, in addition to an estimated $10,000 in damages to the power lines and pole that both ITC and Alliant Energy had repaired within one-hour.

Then on Sunday, two more farm-related accidents occurred.  At 7:36pm, a deputy responded to an overturned bean table on a trailer at R Avenue and 195th Street.  Sheriff Haupert states that a hitch pin was dislodged from a pickup truck which caused the bean trailer to enter a ditch and overturn.  Then at 8:27pm, a grain truck had ended up on its side at Orchard Avenue just south of 170th Street.  Sheriff Haupert says the driver became distracted and entered a ditch causing the grain truck to overturn and spilling soybeans in the ditch.

Later today, deputies will be providing traffic control to allow the crops to be cleaned up, but there were no soybeans spilled onto the roadway.  Haupert says in the third accident there was heavy vehicle damage and the driver was issued a citation for failure to maintain control.

With the Woodward accident Sunday and another fatal farm-related incident over the weekend, Sheriff Haupert says Greene County was quite fortunate.
