Open burning is allowed in Perry for the next couple weeks, but that doesn’t mean you’re allowed to start anything you want on fire.
Police Chief Eric Vaughn says it is limited to strictly yard waste only.
“That’s one of the things we need to remind people, it’s only yard waste, leaves, limbs that kind of thing. No construction materials or any of your garbage, nothing like that. That is restricted to the rear of your property, unless you live on a corner and then you’re offered a little more leeway with that. You also cannot burn within 30 feet of another person’s building, and that’s largely due to just fire safety. We don’t want to catch somebody else’s property on fire or get too close where they’re having to smell the smoke from your leaves or you limbs” says Vaughn.
And if you don’t obey the rules, there are consequences.
“Usually what we do is give somebody live a first offense or a warning and explain the ordinance to them and what the possible penalties could be. But after that a second offense generally costs you a $50 fine, plus court costs so it’s like $135.”
Open yard waste burning season continues until November 23rd in Perry.
