The saying “speed thrills and speed kills” is a common phrase used for many sports to describe the advantage quickness provides on the playing field. That notion was no more on display than in ADM football’s season-ending loss to Carroll in the first round of the playoffs.
Carroll, who won 40-14, seemed to be able to simply outrun ADM on both sides of the ball. Reflecting on this past season, ADM head football coach Mike Whisner said improving the Tigers team speed is a point of emphasis this offseason. As the head boy’s track and field coach in addition to being at the helm of ADM football, Whisner probably has an easier time motivating kids to put in that work this winter and spring.
“The big thing that I see that we do not have right now is we don’t have a lot of team speed,” Whisner said. “We’re quick, but we’re not just flat out ‘run away from you’ type speed.Hopefully we’ll get more guys more involved to track to work on that. I mean that really helps.
“It’s one thing to be able to pass the ball, but if you’ve got really good speed, it’s tough to adjust to that if you’re other teams.”
