ADM cross country honored its seniors Tuesday night at the annual team banquet. The Tigers will only lose a handful of graduating runners who were consistent scorers in races, and have some budding talent at the underclassmen level, particularly on the girls team.
The Tigers varsity girls squad was lead by a group of four freshmen alongside senior Jenny Wicks. The boys team was a little different, as seniors Kyle Ferguson, Trevor Harsh and Connor Slater set the pace with a mix of younger runners behind them.
ADM head coach David Zwank told Raccoon Valley Radio he was happy with his runners’ times this year, saying each runner was successful in their own way. But Zwank wants to see more out of his younger runners, who he said put up impressive times even though they didn’t train as much prior to the season. In other words, a little extra work in the offseason could go a long way to significantly better times next fall.
“That little extra coming in, I definitely feel llke that could be a step in the right direction for a lot of those freshmen, and for both the boys and the girls,” Zwank said. “Even our sophomores and juniors coming into next year — just that little extra training to get ready for the demand of the sport.”
Zwank acknowledged that many of his runners are involved in other sports during the winter and spring, and that he’s not allowed to work directly with runners outside of the season. He said he’ll provide those young runners with guidance for what to do this offseason while keeping a close eye on those multi-sport athletes.
