A 36 year-old Grand Junction woman accused of false reporting with a public safety entity has her arraignment hearing today.
The charge stemmed from an incident on September 29th when Tauwana Laue had reported an attempted abduction of her three year-old daughter near the Greene County Intermediate School. But video surveillance from the school didn’t show that the incident happened. Laue agreed to take a lie detector test and failed to show up for it and was therefore charged with the serious misdemeanor.
Sheriff Steve Haupert says they visited Paton-Churdan elementary students a few days after the alleged incident and he talks about how the kids reacted to the reported attempted abductions.
“It’s almost a debilitating state that they were because for several days after those attempted abductions, they were still really worried and worked up and could not think about the things that they needed to as a youth.”
He adds that he’s pleased that more kids are walking with adults and older siblings to the bus stops and he’s proud with how the community has rallied around the youth. However, he suggests that parents should stay calm when an abduction case is reported which will help to keep children calm in the process.
Laue has been released from jail and can enter a plea agreement during her arraignment hearing today.
