Greene County fell to PCM in Monroe on Tuesday night to open the 2014-15 high school girls’ basketball season, 68-35. The Mustangs, ranked number 12 in Class 3A in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union preseason poll, evened their record at 1-1, and they opened Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play with a victory.
Greene County (0-1, 0-1) led 11-10 after the first quarter and was up 15-14 early in the second when PCM scored 18 unanswered points to lead 34-19. The second half was more of the same as Ram senior Kayla Mobley was the only consistent scoring threat. The 2013-14 first team all-conference selection had 21 of the Rams’ 35 points. No other Greene County player scored more than five. The Rams had turnover troubles with 21 in the first half and 38 for the game. Greene County made 15 of 35 field goal attempts including going one for one on three-point attempts. The Rams were four of seven shooting free throws.
PCM had 24 points from senior Rachel Freland and 14 from sophomore Kayla Jennings. Freland had four three-point goals and Jennings had one. The Mustangs went six of 22 beyond the arc and 29 of 68 overall. They were three of nine shooting free throws and turned the ball over 15 times.
Coach Chad Morton’s Rams will scrimmage in Carroll on Nov. 29 vs. the Tigers, IKM-Manning, and Audubon. The next game on the schedule is Dec. 2 in Colfax vs. Colfax-Mingo at 6 p.m. as part of a girl/boy doubleheader on KG98 with coverage starting at 5:45 p.m.
