After decades of having to deal with safety concerns and a lack of practice space, wrestlers in the Jefferson-based Greene County High School program have a facility all their own, which head coach Mark Sawhill is grateful for. The middle school and high school wrestling programs practice for the second straight year at The Jefferson Fieldhouse, a private facility located just one block south of the downtown square.

Coach Sawhill told Raccoon Valley Radio about the advantages to The Jefferson Fieldhouse. “It’s big, so we have room, which we lacked for years. Now, when we are practicing, we as coaches don’t have to worry about kids knocking into each other and injuries occurring. Plus, it’s a very well padded facility, which again, helps prevent injuries. And, the mats stay here all year long, so they last longer without having to move them from the high school to the middle school like we used to have to shuffle between practice and meets.” Coach Sawhill also pointed to the wrestling part of the building being climate controlled. Plus, there is a timing device in the room, which is safely located where the coaches and wrestlers can see it, but it’s high enough that it won’t get broken or cause injury to someone.

The Rams have just three home dates this season and two are next week. Greene County hosts Ogden and Van Meter on December 2 at 5:30 p.m., before hosting Carroll High and Winterset on Dec. 4 at 5:30 p.m. The only other varsity home date is Jan. 15 with Nevada and Woodward-Granger.
