18th Street is now open in Perry, though a few finishing touches still need to be done.

The Perry City Council approve a $558,000 pay request for the project at their meeting Monday.

“That brings that basically to 95 percent of that project being completed, there some seeding that needs to be done and they’re saying there’s three to four driveways that need to be put in… so those projects will be done in the spring, weather permitting” says City Administrator Butch Niebuhr who says the contractors did an excellent job on the paving of the project.

The Council has also approved the first reading of two ordinances in regards to the street.

“I think what the Council is trying to do there is get the word out that we are going to be posting that at 30 miles per hour.  It’s very easy on that open stretch with no houses around and no buildings close to the street to get your speedometer up to 35, 40, even 45 miles per hour on that stretch.  So the police are patrolling that right now.  They’re trying to have a presence to let people know when that ordinance does go into effect, they are going to be issuing tickets.”

The other ordinance is in regards to parking not being allowed on either side of the street. The second, and perhaps third and final reading of the ordinance is expected to be on the December 15th meeting agenda.
