It’s been a while since the Greene County and Nevada basketball teams have met each other in a girl/boy doubleheader when all four teams had winning records and were riding winning streaks of three or more games. That’s the case on Friday night in Jefferson at the middle school gym when the Rams host the Cubs in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play. The four teams are a combined 16-1 in the early going with the Greene County girls the only team with a loss. Coach Chad Morton’s Rams dropped their season opener to Class 3A number 12 PCM in Monroe, but have won three straight since then, and have scored 63 or more points in all three games. Kayla Mobley is the leader in scoring for Greene County at 18.8 points per game. The Nevada girls are 5-0 and ranked number 7 in 3A, and none of the five Cubs’ opponents have been closer than 13 points.

The Rams and Cubs are both 3-0 on the boys’ side. Greene County has wins on the road at Colfax-Mingo and CMB, plus a victory at home on Tuesday of this week over South Hamilton (Jewell). Sophomore Trey Tucker is one of Class 3A’s top scorers through three games with an average of 28.3 points. Tucker has also been a model of consistency with games of 28, 28, and 29 points, and he’s made over 62% of field goal attempts. The Rams are halfway to last season’s total of six victories, and a Jefferson-based boys’ team hasn’t started 4-0 for several seasons.

Both games can be heard on KG98 and streamed on raccoonvalleyradio.com. Coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. with the girls playing at 6 p.m. and the boys to follow.
