Sherry Bates of Scranton was recently appointed to the Iowa Board of Regents.
The 62 year-old is a graduate of Iowa State University with a degree in child development. She was a social worker for the Greene County Medical Center. She recently retired from the Greene County Board of Health where she spent 19 years serving the people of the county. She is also a current board member for the Scranton Telephone Company, Greene County Community Foundation and Bates was a past member of the Scranton Library Board.
Iowa Governor Terry Branstad said the Bates’ work in the community as a social worker demonstrates her commitment to public service.
The Board of Regents goal is to enhance the quality of life by maintaining the quality and accessibility of the five state institutions it oversees including the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, University of Northern Iowa, the Iowa School for the Deaf and the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School. The Board is comprised of nine citizen members who serve six-year terms.
Bates will be filling a vacancy left by Nicole Carroll. Bates’s term is effective immediately through April 30, 2017.
