The Greene County High School basketball teams both broke losing streaks against Colfax-Mingo on Friday night in the middle school gym in Jefferson. Greene County’s girls snapped a six-game skid with a 55-30 victory over the 0-12 Tigerhawks. The Greene County boys had lost their previous three games and six of seven before winning 73-58 over C-M, now 0-10 overall and in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play.

Coach Chad Morton’s girls’ team is now 5-5 in the conference and 5-7 overall after overcoming a slow offensive start. The Rams trailed 11-7 with 5:57 to play in the second quarter and went on a 17-4 to lead 24-15 at intermission. The lead kept growing in the second half with the final margin being the largest. Kayla Mobley had 12 points, with Hannah Onken 10 to lead the Rams in scoring. Both are seniors. C-M was led by freshman McKeely Tjaden with 14.

The boys’ game saw the Rams lead 21-15 at the end of the first quarter and then 37-21 late in the second quarter after a 12-0 run. Coach Jeramie Hinote’s team was up 37-25 at the half and seven points was as close as C-M could get in the second half. The Rams made six goals from three-point range in the opening half and finished seven of 28 from long range. Sophomore Trey Tucker had 29 points for Greene County with senior Riah Nelsen at 12 and 10 for junior Ried Lamoureux. Junior Colin Laurens and Jacob Lietz had 22 and 21 points, respectively for the Tigerhawks.

The win put Greene County at 5-6 overall and 5-4 in the conference with the CMB (Maxwell) girls and boys visiting the middle school gym in Jefferson on Tuesday, Jan. 20 on KG98. Coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. with the girls playing at 6 and the boys to follow.
