Recently, the Greene County High School implemented a new after school tutoring program to help students become proficient in reading and math.
District Reading Specialist Julie Neal says based on results from the Iowa and STAR assessments, any 9th or 10th grader who is below the 40th percentile in reading or math are recommended for tutoring. The sessions are offered every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-4:30pm.
The same kind of system is already in place for kindergarten through eighth grade which focuses solely on reading. Neal states that for kindergarten through sixth grade, tutoring sessions are 1 ½-hours after school in their respective buildings. The seventh and eighth grades receive their tutoring in the morning at the middle school.
Neal points out that all the tutoring sessions are designed to give students extra help they need to become proficient in their education.
“Basically, we’re just giving kids extra support that they needed. We also be skill groups during the day, but we also wanted to just have a little extra support throughout the year to give these kids a little more help that they need to get them where they need to go and to get them at grade level.”
During the high school tutoring sessions, students can receive help to improve their STAR Assessment scores in reading and math and support for what they are currently doing in the classroom.
Neal adds that any high school student who feels they need extra help in reading or math and aren’t recommended to attend tutoring sessions, may also come to their afternoon program.
