ADM wrestling’s team’ journey to the state duals ended with a thud Tuesday night in LaPorte City against the #1 ranked Union Knights. The Knights beat ADM 63-15, ending the team portion of the Tigers’ season.
Three Tigers picked up victories, including juniors Nathan Heath and Hunter Gibson, the latter by forfeit, and from sophomore Cole Bennett. Junior Zach Johnston, ranked third in Class 2A at 160 pounds, lost for just the second time all season to fifth-ranked Trevor McLaughlin in a 7-3 decision. Senior Trevor Harsh, ADM’s only other ranked wrestler, did not compete.
ADM captured a sectional title on Saturday but were saddled with the toughest possible draw against Union, which prevented the Tigers from achieving their preseason goal of earning one of eight spots at the state duals tournament in Des Moines.
The season is far from over for the seven Tigers that advanced to this Saturday’s district tournament at Ballard. Bennett, Gibson, Heath, Johnston, Harsh, Zach Ostendorf and Kyle Wilkerson will all be vying for a spot at the individual state tournament.
