Increased Law Enforcement Out During March’s sTEP Wave

Extra law enforcement will be out looking for drunk drivers for the next few days during the Special Traffic Enforcement Program by the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau.

Greene County Sheriff Steve Haupert says they will be out with extra patrol during the upcoming sTEP Wave.  The Sheriff’s office also receives funds from the state government for their participation in sTEP.  Haupert explains the details of this year’s funding.

“This year we are receiving $4,200 by participating in the Traffic Safety sTEP week.  We have purchased four, new in-car radars of which we are grateful for that.”

Haupert points out that Deputy Dave Kersey is the coordinator for sTEP and talks about how he reports their information to the state.

“It’s his (Kersey’s) responsibility to keep track of all (traffic) stops that we make, whether they’re speeding, seatbelt, OWI or any citations in general that we record and then have to report to the state.  And that’s kind of how they (state government) tracks this whole system.”

sTEP will last until Tuesday, March 17th.
