An accidental fire destroyed two structures in Greene County Wednesday afternoon.
Sheriff Steve Haupert tells Raccoon Valley Radio he spotted black smoke coming from 1243 305th Street, just south of Jefferson at 2:15pm. When Haupert arrived on scene, he says a workshop was fully engulfed in flames.
By the time the Jefferson and Scranton Fire departments and Greene County Emergency Medical Services responded, the fire had spread to a machine shop located just north of the workshop.
Haupert notes that some of the materials in the machine shop caused brief explosions but that no one was hurt in the incident. Several items, including specialty tools, mowers, motorcycles and both structures are a total loss. There was also minor damage done to three tractors, for a total damage estimate of more than $200,000. The property is owned by Tom Flack and no one was home at the time of the fire.
Fire crews were able to prevent any further property damage, including saving a storage bin located just south of the workshop. Haupert adds that the exact cause of the fire may never be determined due to the extensive damage that was done.
