The State Supplemental Aid for schools debate continues at the capitol, as the two parties are 2.75 percent apart when it comes to how much they think should be given to schools.

District 10 State Senator Jake Chapman says whatever is decided upon, there needs to be a plan set to fund it.

“It’s disingenuous for us to be setting a State Supplemental Aid that we can’t fund.  We’ve done that.  You know, over the last 10 years I believe it has been six times that State Supplemental Aid and not funded it, almost to the tune of $600,000.  That’s not responsible.”

Chapman says he knows that there are people that really want to see a four percent State Supplemental Aid but it’s not something they can responsibly do right now.

“There’s just not a pathway to get to four percent (Supplemental Aid) with our current state budget.  That would require us, over the next two years, to cut or raise taxes by 575 roughly, million dollars.”

Senator Chapman says he’s optimistic that the conference committee will be able to come to an agreement and put forth a plan to make it work.
