pawsThis Saturday will be a pet adoption event at Bomgaard’s in Jefferson.

People for Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) hosts a few pet adoption events every year in which they have dogs and cats available for people looking for a new pet.  Past-President Adrienne Smith says they have a six-person board with another 12 volunteers.  The animal shelter is located at 605 West Russell Street in Jefferson.

The facility consists of seven dog runs with a small dog area and a cat room with a patio.  Smith notes that they’ve had as many as 11 dogs and 20 cats at the shelter.  They receive animals either as owner surrenders or homeless.  Once they take in an animal, the owner has three days to claim it otherwise it becomes property of PAWS.  Smith adds that the staff feeds the animals, makes sure it is spayed or neutered and is microchipped.

Smith points out that their local adoption events are great for pets to go to good homes, but sometimes, animals are adopted in different ways.  PAWS has a “cat window” at Petsmart in Des Moines and Smith describes how beneficial the resource is for them.

“We have to do so many adoption events with them throughout the year to be able to keep the cat window.  And the cat window has been really helpful in having people view our cats and moving the cats (into new homes).”

The adoption event will be from 10am-2pm on Saturday, April 11th.  All animals are up to date on their rabies and other preventative shots and all are microchipped.
