A Churdan Man Receives Sentencing in Boone County Court

A Churdan man was sentenced in Boone County court on Tuesday.

According to the Boone County Clerk of Court, 22 year-old Larry Lee Warren Varnell received a deferred judgment for the charge of a Class D Felony for providing alcohol to a minor resulting in death after changing his plea to guilty in February.

The charge stems from an investigation relating to the death of 20 year-old Aaron Beaman of Jefferson in September of 2014.  Law enforcement officials found Beaman’s body in the 600 block of L Avenue in Boone County after he was killed in a one-vehicle crash.  Jefferson Police Officer Heath Enns works part time for both the Greene and Boone County Sheriff’s offices and has been helping with the investigation.  He says alcohol containers were found around Beaman’s body.  Beaman had allegedly been with Varnell the day of the incident.

Judge James B. Malloy sentenced Varnell to probation for no less than two years and not to exceed five years on the felony charge.  He was also ordered to undergo a substance abuse evaluation and can not enter any business establishment where the sale of alcohol is more than 50 percent of the total sales.  Varnell must also pay $750 in civil penalties, $219.04 in court costs and $180 for a court-appointed attorney.

Varnell was also sentenced to two years of probation after pleading guilty to a driving while barred charge in Greene County court in February.
