No one was injured, but heavy vehicle damage was the result of a one vehicle accident in Greene County Monday.
Sheriff Steve Haupert says at 3:48pm, a deputy and a Department of Transportation Enforcement Officer responded to a single vehicle crash on D Avenue and 110th Street, near the Greene and Calhoun County line.
The driver, 46-year old Philip Edward Shaw of Des Moines, was traveling north on D Avenue when he lost control of his 1996 GMC K-3500 pickup truck sending it into the east ditch. The truck was pulling a gooseneck trailer that had ten large bales of hay on it. Haupert notes that they believe the driver became distracted, which caused his vehicle to go into the ditch. The truck ended on its side and the trailer was jack-knifed on the truck. Shaw told the deputy that he had bought the hay and was transporting it to a facility in Sac County to make it as a cover crop for the DOT.
Shaw was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident and was uninjured. Haupert reminds everyone to always wear your seatbelt, not only is it the law, but it can keep you from getting hurt or worse in an accident.
Both the truck and trailer are a total loss. Shaw will face several citations from the DOT including equipment violations and failure to have a commercial transport license.
