It’s been a long time since a home track meet has been held at West Central Valley High School. The school’s new athletic facilities now make it possible to host a meet, and that will happen tomorrow night. Head girls track coach Mike Vokes says he’s excited that his athletes finally get to run in front of their peers. “What it does, is it lets the other student body members know that there’s a team. They don’t see them perform otherwise, so it’s sort of ‘out of sight, out of mind.’ It puts a little bit of pressure on the kids to perform, in a good way, knowing friends and family are watching. It’s a night where they can be proud of their accomplishments.”
District Activities Director Tod Broman says putting the meet together with the new facilities and new electronic timing equipment has been a lot of work. “It’s been several years since we’ve had a home track meet, so this will be a true test as to whether we’re ready or not.”
Tomorrow night’s home meet will serve as Senior Night, the first of which track athletes at West Central Valley have ever seen.
