Perry senior soccer player Oscar Chavez signed a NAIA National Letter of Intent to play soccer at Clarke University in Dubuque. Chavez made it official in front of family and a large turnout of supporters at the Brady Library.
“It’s just an awesome feeling,” Chavez smiled. “I never thought I would play college soccer but now it is a reality and I’m so excited. They have already sent me a packet to get ready for soccer at the next level. One of the first things I need to do is simply get bigger and gain some weight. I will be working out this spring and summer and head to Dubuque in early August to get used to the town and the team.”
Clarke competes in fall soccer. Head Coach Gary Overla was not surprised that Chavez will be continuing his career at the next level.
“We call Oscar the problem solver. If there is a problem on the field I can always count on Oscar to figure it out. He has the unique ability of both possessing the ball and conversely dispossessing the ball from the opponent. He is so good at taking the ball away from the larger players.”
Chavez and the Bluejays are currently in first place in the Raccoon River Conference and will play three games next week including a key match-up with fellow conference leader ADM on Tuesday.
