Nancita Wernett recently moved back to Guthrie Center from the Iowa City area and felt something was missing in her life. The relaxing vibes from a cozy jam session she had come to know and love in the college town as part of the Eastern Iowa Folk Alliance were nowhere to be found in Guthrie County. The former Guthrie Center High School art teacher has decided to start the Western Iowa Folk Alliance and their first session is next week. Wernett says whatever instrument you play, you’re welcome to come jam. There’s only one rule she says. No amplifiers. “I think the only restriction we have is that it was unplugged. We weren’t plugging it in, because that drowns out a lot of people unplugged and creates a whole different set of issues. We want it to be nonthreatening. Musicians who have no venues to play and aren’t paying the bills with our musical skills, we just tend to hide in our homes and play alone. This is an opportunity for them to come out and play again.”
The first jam session is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19th at 6:30 p.m. inside of the Guthrie Center Activity Center and anyone is invited to attend. Wernett will be our guest today on Let’s Talk Guthrie County to talk more about the event. It airs during the 9 a.m., noon and 5 p.m. hours on K107.9 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
