Members of the Perry Volunteer Fire Department got an early wakeup call Monday when they were called to respond to a house fire.

April Marie Steadman of 1611 4th Street called 911 shortly after midnight stating that her home was on fire and there was a lot of smoke.  Everyone was able to make it out safely before crews arrived, except Steadman’s dog.

Firefighters were in route two minutes after the alarm went off and on scene just five minutes later.  Upon arrival, Fire Chief Chris Hinds says they hooked the first truck up to a water hydrant and began attacking the fire through the front door.  After a good initial knock down of the fire, Hinds says it was completely extinguished shortly thereafter.

A total of 17 firefighters responded to the scene, along with several members of the Perry Police Department.  All first responders were back at the station by 2:02am.
